Veronica Kane Heaning (“Roni”) of Clark, New Jersey, passed away March 7, 2023, surrounded by friends and family after a struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). She was born in Queens, New York, to Richard and Josephine (O’Gorman) Kane on October 28, 1965. Roni grew up in Middle Village alongside her sisters and attended St. Vincent Ferrer High School, where she developed a love for learning and met lifelong friends.
She attended the University of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio, earning a Bachelors in Education and celebrating basketball wins with dear friends and her Tri-Lambs. She remained a steadfast Flyers fan her entire life. She also earned a Masters in Education from Queens College and continued on to teach elementary school in Queens, NYC.
A lifelong beach baby, Roni loved her summers spent on the Jersey Shore, where she met Edward Heaning, her husband of 30 years. Together, they raised five children and passed on her passion for learning to each. She returned to teaching as a substitute at Arthur L. Johnson High School and loved her students and fellow faculty members.
Although faced with a devastating disease, she maintained a bright outlook and continued to keep a sharp wit, attending numerous Broadway shows, concerts, and Dayton, Yankees and Rangers games with family and friends. A beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, godmother, friend and teacher, she was thankful to be so surrounded by love and support during her fight.
Roni leaves behind her loving husband, Ed; adoring children, Megan, Kane, Colin, Erin, Shannon; cherished sister Jennifer Kane McGee; mother Josephine Kane as well as countless friends, family, students, and colleagues. A woman of steadfast faith, she is preceded in heaven by father Richard Kane and twin sister Catherine McGarvey, who also battled ALS bravely.
There are no words to express how grateful and blessed we have felt by all the support in these past months, and we hope Roni’s joy for life and family in all forms will continue to live on in all those who knew and loved her.
