Thomas E. Spych, 83, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2025. Born on June 27, 1942, Thomas grew up in Winfield Park, and Roselle, New Jersey, the son of Joseph and Bernice Spych. He shared his childhood with his older brother, Joseph, and his younger sister, Linda. He attended Abraham Clark High School in Roselle.
Thomas proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1963. He was aboard the USS Little Rock for the naval blockade of Cuba during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. A dedicated veteran, he was a longtime member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Throughout his life, Thomas worked with his hands and took pride in every job he did. He was a former employee of Sobel Fuel in Newark and worked as an oil burner mechanic for Walsh’s Oil Service throughout the 1980s. Seeking a new direction, he attended Union County Vocational School to become an electrician, a path that led him to the Woodbridge Developmental Center, where he worked for twenty years until his retirement in 2005.
Thomas lived in the Colonia section of Woodbridge Township from 1983 until his passing, building a life centered on family, hard work, and the things he loved. He had a lifelong passion for cars and motorcycles, and he found joy in sailing and fishing—activities that brought him peace and adventure.
Above all, Thomas cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Maureen; his son Jason and daughter-in-law Danielle; and his beloved granddaughter Emma, who adored her grandpa and shared a special bond with him. His love, warmth, and steady presence will be deeply missed.
Thomas’s legacy lives on in the family he loved, the friendships he forged, and the many lives he touched along the way.
Visitation will be held at Gosselin Funeral Home, New Dover Rd. in Edison, NJ on Thursday, December 4th from 10am to 12pm, with a funeral service immediately following. Internment will then follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery Mausoleum, Inman Ave., Colonia.
