Telford Williams Obituary

Live Stream

Telford “Ted” A. Williams, 86, of Edison, NJ, passed away peacefully in sleep on January 30th 2026 at his home in Edison.

Ted was born in HANOVER, JAMAICA to ALETHEA AND LEVI WILLIAMS on Sept 11th 1939. He had 6 siblings, Lloyd, Hilda, Patsy, Belva, Sharon and Elaine. He was affectionately known as “Teddy” to his siblings. He went to Rushes High School in Hanover, which he was able to attend as a result of earning a full scholarship, based on his excellent performance throughout elementary school. Ted was always a determined individual who always strove to pursue his goals.

In 1962, he met his future wife, Sonia at work, where they fell in love. Later in 1962, he moved to the UNITED STATES to pursue studies in ENGINEERING AT NEW YORK UNIVERSITY. He graduated with a BACHELORS OF SCIENCE. After he graduated in 1966, he went back to Jamaica to propose to Sonia where they married in 1967. They then both permanently moved to the US and settled in Brooklyn, NY in 1967 to begin to start a family and build a life together.

In 1969, their first child, Sean was born. It was during this time that he started a masters degree program at Columbia University.  He would later go on to earn a Masters Degree in Industrial Engineering at COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY in 1974. Then in 1975 their daughter, Lisa was born. Ted worked as industrial engineer reaching the level director of his department at CON EDISON.

In 1983, Ted moved his family from their Brooklyn apartment to Edison, NJ where he bought his first house. This was a big moment of pride as Ted worked tirelessly to give his family a life that meant truly embodying the American dream.

Throughout his career, he had been recognized for excellence in engineering from AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING and the INSTITUTE OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING. He also partnered with COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY for many years to recruit potential new students who were interested in pursing a career in engineering.

Ted retired from Con Edison after 30+ years in 1998. But he wasn’t interested in just being retired. Surprisingly, he began substitute teaching at the elementary schools in Edison for a few years, which was something he truly enjoyed.

Ted was an AVID BASEBALL FAN with the NY YANKEES being his favorite team.

Ted is survived by his wife, SONIA and their 2 CHILDREN, LISA AND SEAN, his 2 grandchildren, QUINN AND RYLAN, his sisters HILDA, BELVA, SHARON AND ELAINE, and brother LLOYD.
