Ruth Hirschorn Obituary

Ruth Hirschorn (née Levine), 98, of South Plainfield, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, at JFK Medical Center.

Ruth was born in Union City, NJ, to Samuel and Mary Levine on October 26, 1927. The youngest of four children, she grew up in Union City before marrying and moving to Jersey City, where she raised her family. Ruth was a dedicated homemaker for many years and later worked as a typist for a local law firm. In 2009, she moved to South Plainfield to reside with her daughter and son-in-law.

Ruth lived life to its fullest. A vibrant woman, she fondly recalled the dances of her youth and maintained a zest for life that included shopping trips to Macy’s, watching The Golden Girls, and visiting Jersey diners. She cherished day trips to the Shore and Atlantic City, but her greatest joy was her role as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.

Ruth was predeceased by her brothers, Nat Levine and George Levine, and her sister, Faye Schwartzwald. She is survived by her two children, Miriam Bodner and her husband, Butch, and Leon Hirschorn and his partner, Angela Bavosa, all of South Plainfield. She also leaves behind three grandchildren: Marisa (Eric) Strauss, Ryan (Lauren) Bodner, and Ashley (Joseph) DeLia; and seven great-grandchildren: Kay, Emma, Alexa, Hannah, Ethan, Olivia, and Jack.

Friends may visit at Gosselin Funeral Home in Edison, NJ, on Monday, April 6, from 12:00 to 12:30 PM. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 PM at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ. Shiva will be observed at Miriam and Butch’s residence in South Plainfield following the service.
