Robert Vrabel Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert George Vrabel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world on October 1, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on August 18, 1942, in Garfield, NJ, Robert was the son of George and Helen (née Seliga) Vrabel.

Robert graduated from Seton Hall University with a Masters Degree in Education.

Robert dedicated over 40 years to education, beginning his teaching career as a metal and wood shop teacher at Schor Middle School in Piscataway Township, NJ. He later continued his passion for teaching at Quibbletown Middle School, where he was known not only for his commitment to his students but also for his warmth and camaraderie among colleagues. Many fondly remember him for his role in running the soda machine in the teachers' lounge and organizing the annual year-end teachers' picnic, which brought joy and laughter to the staff.

Outside of the classroom, Robert was a man of many interests. He had a great love for horse racing and was a passionate fan of the New York Yankees, New York Giants, and New York Rangers. Many summer nights were spent bartending at various clubs and bars along the Jersey Shore, where he formed lasting friendships and made countless memories. He also found joy in simple pleasures, like maintaining his cars and doing laundry, reflecting his practicality and dedication to family life.

Robert cherished his time with family, particularly during their annual trips to South Florida, where he embraced the role of a 'snowbird' with enthusiasm. He is survived by his loving wife, Patrice Vrabel; his son, Robert Vrabel (and daughter-in-law, Rachel); his daughters, Kimberly Mucci (and son-in-law, Michael) and Colleen Wyber (and son-in-law, John); and his cherished grandchildren, Justine, Michael, and Juliana. He is also survived by his nephew, Gregory Gomes, and niece, Barbara Lynn McCue.

Robert was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Gomes, and brother-in-law, Mario Gomes, who will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

His legacy of kindness, laughter, and unwavering love for his family will live on in all who were fortunate to know him. A celebration of Robert's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to a charity of your choice.

He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever remain in our hearts.

---------------------------------------------------------EULOGY FOR ROBERT G. VRABEL---------------------------------------------------------- Ladies and gentlemen, family, and friends, We gather here today to celebrate the life of Robert George Vrabel — a man whose spirit was as vibrant as the Jersey Shore where he spent countless summers, and whose impact will resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. Born on August 18, 1942, in Garfield, New Jersey, Bob was the son of Helen and George, who instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance. He took those values to Montclair State College, earning his undergraduate degree in education, and then to Seton Hall University, where he earned a master’s degree in education—a testament to his lifelong commitment to learning and teaching. For over 40 years, Dad dedicated his life to shaping young minds as a woodshop and metal shop teacher. His students didn’t just learn how to work with wood and metal; they learned about determination, creativity, and the importance of building a strong foundation—both literally and figuratively. He had a knack for turning raw materials into masterpieces, a skill that extended to everything he touched in life. But he was not just a teacher. He was also a skilled bartender, serving drinks and stories to patrons at various clubs and bars along the Jersey Shore. Those summer nights, filled with laughter and camaraderie, were some of his happiest moments, and he loved sharing them with friends and family. It was on a beach in South Seaside Park, New Jersey, in August 1978, where he met the love of his life, Patrice. Their love story began with a chance encounter and blossomed into a beautiful marriage on November 4, 1979. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and the occasional debate — after all, Dad was known for his spirited discussions, whether they were in the comment sections of Yahoo politics or with complete strangers at the racetrack. Dad had a unique sense of humor and an unwavering belief in the value of hard work. He was the man who insisted that “money doesn’t grow on trees,” yet he always found a way to make the most of what he had. Even if that meant driving 30 minutes out of the way to avoid 75 cents in tolls, or to save 10 cents on a gallon of gasoline. He taught us the importance of persistence, showing us that with determination, we could overcome any obstacle. He embodied the lesson to “always vote your job,” reminding us that our work is a reflection of our values. His hobbies were as varied as his skills. From changing the oil to trading stocks, he approached everything with a hands-on mentality. And yes, he could often be found “backseat driving,” offering his unsolicited advice during family road trips, especially when his son was driving. But above all, he loved doing the laundry, a task that brought him peace and a sense of accomplishment. Dad leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and hard work. He was a builder not just of physical things but of relationships, memories, and lessons that will last a lifetime. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and his spirit will continue to inspire us as we carry his lessons forward. As we say goodbye, let us remember him not with sadness but with gratitude for the moments we shared and the wisdom he imparted. Thank you, Dad, for everything. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten. - Delivered by Robert M. Vrabel (Son)
