Reynolds “Roy” Faber, 93, passed away peacefully at his Colonia home on Friday,
August 13, 2021, surrounded by his family.
Roy was born June 4, 1928, in Staten Island, NY to the late Louis Faber and
Adeline (Lena) Mezzano. Roy met his sweetheart Claire Pakidis of Staten Island
whom he later married in 1959. The couple settled and raised their large family in
Colonia.
A Dongan Hills native, Roy graduated from McKee High School in 1946 and was
employed by Moore McCormick Lines in Manhattan. He went on to serve as a
Seaman second class on the USS Crow in the US Navy Reserve from 1949 to 1954.
A career in golf, he was Assistant Pro to James Todd in 1956 at Braidburn Country
Club, Florham Park. He became Head Pro at Scotch Plains Country Club
(Shackamaxon CC) in 1961. By 1963 Roy was named Head Pro at Colonia Country
Club where he worked until he retired in 1983. Though partially retired, his work
ethic and passion for golf led him to serve for 23 more years at Plainfield Country
Club. He was a Life Member of the National PGA, NJ Section.
Among his many notable competitive accomplishments as a golf professional
were back-to-back runner-up finishes in the NJ State Open in 1962 and 1963. Roy
impressively qualified to participate in the US Open in 1968 and the national PGA
1969 and 1973. He set the course record in 1974 at Colonia CC with a 9 under par
63 which lasted over 2 decades, as well as shooting 64 at Richmond County CC as
a 17-year-old caddy.
Though widely recognized for his golf accomplishments, Roy was as humble as
they come. A friend once said “Roy was a human metaphor of the game of golf.
He and the game are inextricably tethered together by characteristics such as
honesty, integrity, confidence and creativity.”
Roy was preceded in death by his two dear siblings - brother Louis and sister
Beatrice (Bea).
Roy is survived by Claire, his loving wife of 62 years, his 6 children and their
spouses – Roy of Neptune, David of Colonia, Donna of South Plainfield, Steven of
Monroe, Douglas, and Gregory of Linden – as well as 13 grandchildren and a host
of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday August 17th from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at the Gosselin Funeral Home at 660 New Dover Road Edison, NJ.
Funeral service will take place on Wednesday August 18th at 9:45AM at the Gosselin Funeral Home followed by a 10:45AM mass at St. John Vianney Church at 420 Inman Avenue Colonia, NJ. Cremation will be private.
