Edison, NJ - Mr. Raymond “Roman” Banbor, 92, of Edison, passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side on Friday, June 18, 2021. Born and raised in Irvington, NJ, he married the love of his life, Joan, on June 19, 1955. Before moving to Edison in 1956 and building the house they lived in for the rest of their lives.
Raymond served our nation in the United States Army during World War II. Stationed in Japan, he worked as a paratrooper and a radio operator. He was issued a lapel button, awarded the World War II victory medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan. Honorably discharged from the Army he opened a mechanics shop with his brothers, H&H Battery, in Irvington, NJ. He went on to work there for the next 52 years until he retired. He was a member of the Mid-Atlantic Motorcycle Club, Knights of Columbus in Iselin, NJ, and attended the Polish Hall in Irvington, NJ.
Ray was a devoted husband, father, pop-pop, and friend. His greatest joy was being involved in his children and grandchildren’s lives. He loved camping with his family and friends in his trailer, the Wilderness, at his favorite places, Bass River State Forest, NJ, Busch Gardens, Virginia, and Lake Arrowhead, Myrtle Beach, SC. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, and crabbing, going to the beach and swimming in the ocean. He loved listening to country, polka, and opera music, going on cruises and traveling around the world with his wife, Joan. He loved to bake, and cook, especially babkas and pierogies. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and working on cars, he could build or fix anything. Ray was always there with a helping hand if you needed him, he just wanted everyone to be happy.
Raymond was born on November 18, 1928 in Irvington, NJ. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Veronica Banbor, his loving wife of 63 years Joan M. Banbor whom he cherished and adored, his brothers Adam “Murph”, and Walter “Babe” Banbor. He is survived by his six children, Cynthia M. Spiegel (Robert), Kathleen M. Keelyn, Cheryl M. Szwast (Leon), Kristine M. Burr (Raymond), Raymond J. Banbor (Kathleen), and Michael J. Banbor (Nicole). Loving Pop-Pop of Megan Keelyn-Toomey (Daniel), Bethany Spiegel, Glenn Spiegel, Rebekah Burr, Nicholas Keelyn, Jeffrey Banbor (Anastasia), Rachel Burr, Hannah Szwast, Zechariah Szwast, Sophia Banbor, and Victoria Banbor. Raymond is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all that were blessed to know him.
Visitation will be held the evening of Tuesday, June 29, 2021 from 6:00 - 9:00pm at Gosselin Funeral Home, 660 New Dover Road, Edison, NJ 08820. Continued visitation will be held the morning of Wednesday, June 30, 2021 from 10:30 - 11:30am at Gosselin Funeral Home followed by a 1:00pm funeral service and interment at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ 08562.
