Paul Johnson, Sr. Obituary

Paul Thomas Johnson, Sr., 86, of Iselin, NJ entered into eternity on Wednesday, November 4, 2020. Paul was born in Jersey City, NJ on August 21, 1934 to William and Barbara Johnson. The youngest of eight children, family was always at the heart of all Paul did. He was proud of his Irish Catholic roots and was a daily Mass attendee at St Cecelia Church in Iselin.

Paul believed in hard work, responsibility, and dedication. He worked as a paint booth repairman at the General Motors plant in Linden, NJ for 47 years. He also owned a taxicab company with his brother, John which allowed him to indulge his love of driving. Paul was very patriotic and proudly served his country in the 101st Airborne of the US Army at Fort Campbell.

Paul was a devoted and loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. As a young man he was a gifted basketball player. He had a lifelong love of bowling, playing in many leagues over the years with his friend Bob and Bob’s daughter Caroline. He was an avid sports enthusiast and diehard Giants fan. Paul loved to drive and explore the United States, eventually traveling to all 48 of the continental states with his wife by his side. However, his favorite destination was Disney World, a place that he could proudly say that he brought his family to the year that it opened and eventually introduced his grandchildren to as well.

Paul was a generous man whose home was open to family and friends. He happily shared all that he had and sought to help whenever he saw someone in need. He lived by a simple motto, “Actions speak louder than words.” Whether it was the keys to his car, tickets to the Giants game, a place to stay, a dinner out, a gift to his church or a favorite charity, or simply a ride to the airport, his actions always spoke volumes.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Rose, and his devoted children Paul T Johnson, Jr (Janet) of Sparta, NJ and Rosemarie Davis (John) of Iselin, NJ as well as his brother Peter Johnson (Lee) of Ocala, FL. Paul was the very proud “Poppy” of Eric Davis (Lucia), Alyssa Marold (Eric), Evan Davis (Allyson) and his great grandchildren Lily Davis and Jack Davis. He is also survived by his dear sister-in-law Marguerite Afflerbach and his treasured nieces and nephews. In his final weeks, in addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, his nieces Karen Johnson, Denise Benson and Melanie Pietrowski helped him to remain at home surrounded by love and care until he had to return to the hospital where he left for his Heavenly home.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Vincent, William, Francis, John, James, and his sister Patricia.
