With great sorrow, we share with our family and friends the passing of Omar Sanders, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. He is survived by his brother, Edgar; his sons, William, Kyle, and Christopher; and his wife, Laura, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Omar was born to Frank and Stella (née Ruiz) Sanders on December 18, 1963, at St. John’s Hospital in Queens, NY. He was baptized and confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church as a member of St. Andrew Avellino in Flushing, where he was raised. He attended high school at St. Francis Prep, and as a high schooler was in a rock band with his best friends. He especially loved Aerosmith and The Beatles. He was also a proud Eagle Scout.
He attended college at both Hofstra University and the School of Visual Arts, studying graphic design. After beginning his career at Katz Communications in New York City, he spent nearly forty years at NBC Universal. Here, he was a beloved leader, friend, and was skilled at his work.
He had many varied interests. Scuba diving was a great pleasure and passion of his. He was a certified scuba diver and also trained as an instructor and rescue diver. He really loved the beach and the ocean, having shared many shoreline walks with us. As a member of New Dover United Methodist Church, he joined the praise band, Acts of Praise, singing and playing guitar at church for almost 15 years. He eventually led the band and was joined by his sons Will on bass, Kyle on guitar, and Christopher on drums. He was very happy and proud that his sons took after him in their love of music and their natural musicality. He was a Sunday School teacher just like his mother, and was even able to have his boys as Sunday School students throughout his years of teaching.
He lived for 35 years on Princeton Avenue in Rahway, New Jersey. He taught his boys how to swim in the backyard pool, how to ride bicycles at the park down the road, and filled the house with love and warmth every single day. Whether he was cooking his famous holiday recipes, playing his guitar throughout the house, or watching movies from his favorite recliner, his energizing, loving, and comforting presence never once faded. His charisma and sense of humor could lift up any room, and he made anyone present feel welcomed in his home.
Omar was a man of many passions, of which he committed fully to, including photography, woodworking, and cycling. He loved to share his photography online, sell his woodworked crafts at shows, and cycled in the Five Boro Bike Tour. When something piqued his interest, he would fully immerse himself into that world. He loved science fiction, coffee ice cream, telling stories (the funniest!), playing the guitar, watching the Tour de France, Formula 1 racing (he was a Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari fan), and loved to ride his motorcycle and film the adventures on a GoPro. He was a great traveler and was able to get to many bucket list destinations with his wife, Laura, and his sons.
He traveled all over the world including Australia, France, England, Greece, Japan, and all over the United States. He was especially grateful to have visited Stonehenge inEngland. He loved annual summer trips to Ocean City, Maryland, where he would regularly visit nearby Assateague Island to see the wild horses on the beach.
Omar, beloved father, husband, uncle, godfather, and friend, touched many lives, and we are all the better for having known and loved him. We will all carry his memory in our hearts and seek to live lives as full as his.
