Miguel Velasco, known to everyone as Mike, a man of profound strength, unwavering character, and boundless love for his family, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026. He was 85 years old. At the time of his passing, he was right where he always chose to be: accompanied by his devoted wife of 61 years, Brenda.
Known as “Mike” to his many friends and colleagues, and most affectionately as “Abuelo” to the grandchildren who were the light of his life, he was the definition of a family backbone. He was a man who led by example, proving that a life well-lived is one built on hard work, integrity, and a deep-seated devotion to those you love.
Born in Elizabeth Port, New Jersey, on May 14, 1940, Mike grew up with a natural curiosity and a drive to provide. After graduating from Linden High School in 1959, he answered the call of duty by serving in the United States Navy Air. It was during his service that he acquired the electrical expertise that would define his professional journey, but more importantly, he developed the discipline and "can-do" spirit that his family relied upon for decades.
Mike’s career was a testament to his work ethic. He served as a linesman for PSE&G for 17 years (1963–1979), a role that required immense physical strength and courage. During those busy years, he also earned his electrical contractor license—a clear sign of his constant motivation to grow and provide for his household. In 1979, he began a distinguished 20-year career as a supervisor with Exxon, followed by a decade of service as an electrical inspector for Woodbridge. Mike was a man who never truly slowed down because he took pride in his craft and his community.
In 1965, Mike married Brenda, the love of his life, and together they settled in Colonia to build their future. As a father to Scott and Darren Velasco, Mike was more than just a provider; he was a mentor, a protector, and a constant source of motivation. He taught his sons the value of a quick mind and a strong pair of hands.
Nothing brought Mike more joy than the title of “Abuelo.” He adored his two grandsons, Nicolas and Christopher, and made it his mission to be a constant presence in their lives. His greatest joy was found in the simple, beautiful traditions of family life—specifically the Sunday dinners at his house. A lover of cooking and the outdoors, Mike was often found at the stove or the grill, preparing a feast to bring everyone together. To Mike, a full table and the sound of his family’s laughter was the ultimate success.
Mike was a vibrant soul—active, fun-to-be-around, and exceptionally quick-witted. He had a deep appreciation for nature and an infectious love for life that remained with him until the very end.
Mike was predeceased by his parents, Ignacio and Ignacia Velasco and his sister Emma Noone.
He leaves behind a legacy of strength that will continue to guide his wife Brenda; his sons Scott and Darren; his daughters-in-law Gabriela and Cecilia; his grandsons Nicolas and Christopher; and a host of friends who were better for having known him. Mike Velasco was a great man, a dedicated worker, and the steady heart of the Velasco family. He will be deeply missed.
We love you “Abuelo”
