It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Marie Salerno, who passed away peacefully at JFK hospital on Sunday, May 19 , 2024, in Edison, NJ.
She was born on February 27, 1929 to Angelina and Amasio Caporusso in Hoboken, NJ. She was raised in Union City, NJ before settling with her late beloved husband Joseph F. Salerno in Edison, NJ where they raised 11 children. She was a long-standing member of St. Helena’s Roman Catholic Church in Edison and later became a secular Carmelite nun.
Mary's life was a beacon of love and positivity. Her many sacrifices and her devotion to prayer provided a foundation of strength and faith for her family. She believed deeply in the power of personal responsibility and imparted to her children the conviction to "be the change you want to see in humanity." Mary's legacy is one of love, faith, and an unyielding commitment to making the world a better place. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
She is predeceased by her husband who passed in 1995. Her brother William Caporusso, and her parents Angelina and Amasio Caporusso.
She leaves behind her sister Gloria Caporusso. 11 children and their spouses, Joseph and Helen, Linda and Nicholas Bilis, Mary Ann and Carl Padulo, Thomas and Kerrie , John and Sarah, Diane and Michael Omilian, James, Paul and his late wife Karen, Peter, Lisa, and Stephen and Nicole. As well as 25 grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan L., Erica, Mark Thomas, Christine, Jessica, Nicole, Alixandra, Sabrina, Caitlin, Cara, Michael O. , Marlowe, Elena, Inanna, Matthew, Gabrielle, Amanda, Elise, Joshua, Emily, Michael A., Gia, Antonio, Franco, and Gionni, and 17 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Carmelite Nuns, 26 Harmony School Rd., Flemington, NJ 08822 in honor of Mary's dedication to her Carmelite ministry.
