Marie Louise Happel (nee Munzing), age 95 of Colonia, NJ, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 8, 2024. She was the daughter of Charles and Marie Munzing, born June 2, 1928 in Newark, NJ, and graduated from Essex County Vocational and Technical School in 1946. She married Henry Happel on September 4, 1948. They raised their family in Irvington and moved to Colonia in 1983.
Marie was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Irvington, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She and her husband loved to travel, enjoying many road trips across the United States.
She was a member of Colonia Seniors and attended Evergreen Senior Center, where she enjoyed teaching knitting and crocheting to other seniors, going on many trips, and playing cards. She made and donated lap robes for nursing home residents and countless preemie sweaters and blankets for Heavenly Angels. She was an avid reader, enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, and loved her cat, Trooper.
Marie is predeceased by her husband, Henry, and her brothers, Charles and Walter. She is survived by her daughters, Judy Gessner (Ralph) and June Rokosz; grandchildren Jacqueline McCort (Matthew), Eric Rokosz (Ashley), Evan Gessner (Jennifer), Nicole Rokosz (Marcos Ramos), Kimberly Rokosz, Timothy Rokosz, and Michael Rokosz; and great grandchildren Nicholas, Tyler, Matthew, Cooper, Miles, Madeline, Stevie, Harrison, Frances, and Alexander.
Marie loved her family and friends and will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital.
