Maria de Los Angeles Mateo entered into heaven’s glory on October 29, 2025, at the age of seventy-one while surrounded by her loving family in Columbia, South Carolina.
She was born on February 12, 1954, in Coamo, Puerto Rico to her parents Miguel and Felicita Mateo. She lived a life marked by faithful and loving service to her Savior, her family, friends, and the students she taught as a public-school teacher in Bayonne, NJ. Her greatest joys and accomplishments in life were those she cherished as an adoring wife, loving mama, and doting ‘Lala’ as she is affectionately known by her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Miguel and Felicita Mateo, her brother Jose Mateo, and nephew Joshua Mateo. Maria is survived by her beloved husband, Israel Mateo, daughter Jessica White, her grandchildren-John, Adanna, Felicity, Madison, Gemma, and Benaiah White as well as her siblings, Maria Dolores Gavilanes, Miguel Mateo, Virginmina Febus, Louis Mateo, Edwin Mateo, and Lissett Colon.
Her memorial service will take place on Thursday, November 6th beginning at 2:30 PM at Grace Bible Fellowship church (15 W 21st St, Bayonne, NJ 07002). The family will receive visitors immediately prior, from 1:30 until the start of the service.
