Maria DeLucia Obituary

Maria Catena (née Renda), 89, of Rahway, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026. Born in San Piero Patti, Sicily in 1936, Maria came to the United States in 1957 in search of opportunity, carrying with her the courage, faith, and work ethic that would define her entire life.

In 1960, on the steps of St. Lucy’s Church in Newark, she met the love of her life, Luigi DeLucia. They married in 1961 and shared 44 beautiful years together - a partnership marked by devotion, generosity, and a warmth that drew people in. Their home was always open, their table always full, and their hearts always ready to welcome anyone who needed a place to belong.

Maria and Luigi first built their life together on Crane Street in Newark before settling in Rahway in October 1967, where Maria created a home that became the center of gravity for family, friends, and neighbors. Holidays, Sunday dinners, and celebrations of every kind were held in her home—often in the little basement that somehow fit dozens of people, all wrapped in laughter, food, and the unmistakable feeling of being loved.

A gifted seamstress, Maria owned and operated a beloved fabric and sewing shop in Garwood for many years. Through her business, she stitched together more than garments—she built relationships, offered guidance, and shared her talents with anyone who walked through her door. Her hands were rarely still: sewing, cooking, gardening, or helping someone in need.

Maria was an extraordinary cook, known especially for her homemade pasta, stuffed artichokes, and the lentils that became a family favorite. Her meals were never just food—they were expressions of love, tradition, and the joy she found in bringing people together.

Deeply rooted in her faith, Maria was a devoted parishioner of St. John the Apostle Church, where she found community, purpose, and countless friendships. Her involvement extended far beyond the pews—whether through church activities, local scouting groups, or community events, Maria was always ready to lend a hand. She was nurturing, protective, and fiercely loyal, the kind of woman who would fight for anyone who needed her strength.

Maria is survived by her loving son Victor DeLucia and his wife Michelle DeLucia; her cherished grandchildren Gianna, Marina, and Luigi DeLucia; and her beloved siblings Carmela, Rita, Gina, Sylvia, Valentino, and Rosanna. She is reunited in eternal peace with her devoted husband, Luigi.

To know Maria was to feel welcomed, cared for, and uplifted. Her legacy lives on in the traditions she created, the values she instilled, and the countless lives she touched with her generosity, humor, and unwavering love.
