Margaret Mary McLoughlin Shaughnessy, of Colonia, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2025, at her home in Colonia, after suffering several years with dementia. Margaret was born in Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim Ireland. The youngest of nine children. She came to the U.S. in 1959. A homemaker and beloved mother, nana, sister, auntie, and friend to so many. She was an active member of St. John Vianney Parish, Colonia. She attended mass daily and was a Eucharistic minister, a rosarian, a companion to the sick and elderly. She was a dear friend to many priests within the diocese and often invited them to lunch or dinner at the house. She was rich in both her faith and her culture. She was an active member of the American Irish Association for five decades. She volunteered at many events – fundraisers, park clean ups, parades, and dances. She loved to dance and sing and had a particular love of Irish dance of course. Margaret was of small stature, but she was mighty in her faith and determination. She was our matriarch who loved to host parties and mandatory Sunday family dinners. She was filled with endless energy and had a sparkle and silly wit that will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
Margaret is survived by her son Brian and daughter in-law JoAnn of Colonia; her son Robert and daughter in-law Melissa of Shrewsbury; her daughter Maureen and son in-law Dan Crowley of Flemington; and seven beloved grandchildren- Kiley and her husband Jim, Brian, Ryan, Aidan, Meghan, Avery, Brendan, and great grandson Ziggy. Also, many nieces and nephews both near and far.
She was the beloved wife of forty seven years to the late Charlie Shaughnessy. The beloved sister of the late Aggie McKenna, Molly Breen, Ann Dodsley, Delia Cobham, Rose Lyons, Dennis, Packey, and Peter McLoughlin.
As we remember Margaret, we celebrate a woman whose life was defined by strong faith, passion, and an unyielding love for her family. They will carry her spirit within them, a guiding light.
