Kim Silva-Martinez Obituary

Beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, impassioned educator and devoted friend, Kim Marie “Kim” Silva-Martinez entered Eternal Life, May 25, 2026 in the arms of her cherished daughter, Olivia, surrounded by her loving family.

We contemplate often what it is that defines a life and a lifetime of living. For Kim, life’s definition and context found its deepest expression in the arts of loving fully and teaching the literary arts masterfully with a commitment to nurturing her students’ skills as writers and communicators.

As an adjunct professor of Freshman writing, most recently in the department of Writing Studies at Montclair State University and Fairleigh Dickinson University, and formerly at Middlesex County College, Kim introduced her students to formal academic writing, its genres, mechanics and functions, preparing them to succeed as communicators not only in their chosen major fields of study but as lifelong learners skilled in engaging with the written word.

Kim had a profound commitment especially to her “first generation” students who were first in their families to seek higher education. Often bilingual English-Spanish-speaking students, she used her own personal history and deep connection and knowledge of Hispanic literature and culture of Mexico, Central and South America to weave historical, cultural, and literary themes into writing assignments as a bridge between her students’ lived bi-cultural experiences. She was a keen observer of contemporary culture and understood well the stressors some students faced in navigating home, school, employment, and young adult life and sought to encourage and support them in countless selfless ways to persevere and succeed. In this she was most successful as evidenced by the many students who sought academic recommendations from Kim and who captured honors and awards during their undergraduate careers.

Kim was the elder daughter of Henry “Hank” and Marilyn Galindo-Kapraszewski, born February 18, 1960, in Colonia, N.J. She was joined by younger sister, Karen, in 1962. Home was the center of her childhood and adolescence. The family were parishioners of St. John Vianney R.C. Church in Colonia, where both sisters attended St. John Vianney Grammar School and St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Edison, N.J. where Kim graduated valedictorian. School activities, guitar, cheerleading, and friendships were the fabric of her school days.

As a young child, Kim was fortunate to have traveled to Mexico with her mother, maternal aunt and cousins for extended visits with her maternal grandparents and maternal aunt who lived in Xalapa, capital of the state of Vera Cruz. Her “abuelo” who had emigrated to the United States as a young man returned for professional work in green coffee importing and exporting.

The family’s life was forever altered by the loss of Kim’s mother during her senior year of high school. After pursuing undergraduate and graduate work in English Language and Literature and International Literature at Middlesex County College and Montclair State University, she embarked on a teaching career specializing in Freshman College Writingand Senior Honors Thesis Mentoring during both the academic year and summer sessions. Published work includes “Endless Possibilities: Middlesex County College 1964-2014” a 152-page chronicle of the history of Middlesex County College to celebrate the college’s fiftieth anniversary.

Kim’s essence can best be seen and understood in the roles she lived as mother, wife and daughter, extending her maternal care, as we’ve seen, to her students as well. She is survived by her devoted husband, John, cherished “soul mate” daughter, Olivia Marie, sons, David and Raphael and her “forever sister” Karen. Her four beloved dogs must also be mentioned within her circle of love. Kim’s mother’s twin sister, Aunt Dolores, has been her “mother on Earth” and “older cousin-as-close-as sister” Katherine was a constant presence particularly in the months of her illness. Kim is predeceased by many beloved family members: father, maternal and paternal grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousins.

Defining a life and a lifetime of living has been a mighty joy, privilege, and honor to have been tasked to do for the beautifully complex, highly intelligent, accomplished and loving woman we have been blessed to share family life with. Living into the future without her is a reality that has been thrust upon us. Knowing she is in God’s eternal peace and light, we also know she is no further from us than our loving gaze and a whispered prayer.
