Joseph John Miller, Jr., 87, of Edison, NJ, passed away on August 24, 2025, at Menlo Park Veterans Memorial Home.
Born in Raritan Township on April 2, 1938, to Joseph Miller, Sr. and Annie Opitz, Joe grew up with a love for sports and community. He graduated from Perth Amboy High School in 1955, where he played baseball and proudly recalled the time he stole home plate, a story he shared often with his family and friends.
Following high school, Joe served his country in the United States Navy as a Radioman Third Class aboard the USS Salem, specializing in communications. He fondly remembered his time in France and the Mediterranean. In 2008, he had the opportunity to revisit the USS Salem, now docked in Quincy, Massachusetts, alongside his family.
Joe worked as a union ironworker and later held positions as a hotel security guard and liquor store cashier. Outside of work, he was a devoted sports fan, cheering for the Green Bay Packers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and the Brooklyn Dodgers. He especially enjoyed listening to games on the radio while relaxing in his car.
A passionate history enthusiast, Joe had a particular interest in the Civil War and spent countless hours watching the History Channel and discussing what he learned. He also cherished family vacations in Wildwood, where he could often be found in the early mornings walking the beach with his metal detector, searching for treasures.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Rhoda Miller of Edison, NJ; his children, Christian Miller and wife Julie, Jill Remaykis and husband Jay, and Jessica Morey and husband Jim; his cherished grandchildren, Jordan, James, and Olivia; and his sister, Rosemarie “Mitzi” Surma.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 28th from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Gosselin Funeral Home in Edison, NJ.
A funeral service will follow on Friday, August 29th at 10:00 AM at St. Helena Roman Catholic Church in Edison, officiated by Father Robert Lynam.
Private interment to be held at a later date.
Joe will be remembered for his unwavering love for family, deep appreciation for history, and the countless stories he shared that will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
