James Manning Obituary

James N. Manning (1937-2023) – Born in Orange, New Jersey, graduated from West Side High School in
Newark in 1955. Jim earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies from Montclair State Teachers College in
1959.
After graduating, he began his career as a sixth-grade teacher in the Hazlet School District in 1959. After
three years in Hazlet, he transferred to the New Providence School District, where he spent eight years
as a sixth-grade teacher and reading specialist. While teaching in New Providence, Jim received a
Master’s Degree from Seton Hall University.
In 1970, Jim became the Reading Curriculum Supervisor for grades K-12 in the Woodbridge Township
school district. During his time in Woodbridge, Jim served in many capacities in addition to his main
duties, among them acting principal and department chairman for various departments.
Upon his retirement in 1995, Jim spent time following his many passions, most notably fossil and
mineral collecting. He enjoyed attending fossil and mineral shows and speaking with other collectors.
His sense of adventure and love of the outdoors helped fuel this interest.
Jim enjoyed science fiction novels and reading the New York Times on a daily basis. He loved dogs,
owning three during the course of his life. In addition, Jim was fascinated with weather and tracking
storms, making sure to always be prepared for the next ‘big one”.
A devoted father to his only daughter, Carolyn Zindel, and his grandson, Reid Zindel, he enjoyed
spending quality time with his family. Reid attributes his appreciation of nature and animals to his
grandfather. He has fond memories of being taken just about everywhere and being taught life lessons
too numerous to mention. Simply, his grandfather being a true father figure.
He is survived by his daughter Carolyn Zindel, grandson Reid Zindel, his former wife Janet Manning,
nieces Laura Mayer and Kathy Belknap, and Riley, a thirteen-pound Yorkshire Terrier.
