Hsi Wu Obituary

With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Hsi Lan (Chiu) Wu, at
the age of 97, in Edison, NJ. Hsi Lan was born in Miaoli, Taiwan, on April 11, 1927. She was a
graduate of Miaoli High School. After graduation, she married Chi Yao Wu, and had four
children: Shu Mei Wu (Chiu Wang), Juen Yan Wu (Sheu Hwa Jan), Shu Yuan Wu, and Wen
Yen Wu (Rita). During her childhood, Taiwan was under Japanese rule, and under that regime,
Hsi Lan learned the Japanese language and related traditions. Until her dying day, she was
fastidiously clean and elegant in all ways, and even neatly folded her hands across her body to
signify to us that she was ready for heaven. She dutifully thanked all of her children and
relatives who visited and cared for her this summer.
Hsi Lan was predeceased by her father, Hsi Bing Hsu, her mother, Ying Mei Hsi, and her
husband of 44 years, Chi Yao Wu. She is survived by her sister, Chin Lan Hsu (age 85), her
four children, grandchildren Chia-Ming Balady (Sam), Emily Murphy (Keith), Chia-Yen Wu
(Charmaine), Logan Wang, Michelle Perdomo (Jorge), and Lawrence Wu (Elina); and great-
grandchildren Elle, Beckett, Lila, Brandon, Leo, and Evelyn. She was immensely proud of her
U.S. family, as well as her family in Taiwan.
Hsi Lan was a devoted homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She moved
from Taiwan to Edison, NJ in 1983 to help care for her grandchildren, who were growing up in
the U.S. She spent 41 years in Central Jersey caring for her family, her first priority. Hsi Lan had
endless amounts of grace, patience, kindness, and compassion for others. She was soft-spoken
and gentle, never a rough edge to her words or gestures. Hsi Lan was a dedicated member of
the Dharma Drum Buddhist Mountain Association.

In her last week of life, she remained cheerful and gracious. Hsi Lan left us too early on August
10, 2024, without any pain or suffering. We are grateful for that and relieved that she has been
reunited with her husband Chi Yao Wu, from whom she was separated far too early in life. Our
family will deeply miss her pleasant disposition, sense of humor, and her leadership of our clan.
We will forever remember our “A-Tai” as a role model of gratitude for all of the good things in
life.
