Harry G. Milne, of Colonia, a dedicated husband of 63 years, dearest father, and devoted Poppy entered the kingdom of heaven Tuesday, December 26th, 2023. He was 104 and died peacefully at home surrounded by his beloved family, caregiver (Anna) and his dog (Snickers). Born in Staten Island, NY, in 1919 he lived in Colonia for the past 67 years.
As a humble WWII veteran, he served the world in so many ways. He was drafted in 1942 into the Army Corps of Engineers serving in Tunisia, North Africa. He was honorably discharged after a service-related accident in 1944 at the age of 25. He never saw his war-lost leg as a disability, going on to marry and raise five children. After receiving a WWII Veteran hat as a gift and proudly sporting it everywhere he went, he received an outpouring of respect from all who acknowledged his service which he held in the highest regard. Giving and receiving a simple hug from anyone brought him so much joy!
He worked at Weston’s (Newark - 1946-1955). He was employed by Engelhard (Carteret) as a precious metal welder from 1955, retiring in 1984.
Everyone knew Harry for the “greenest lawn in the neighborhood”. He enjoyed gardening, playing the horses, football, family trips to the beach, Atlantic City, spending time and caring for his grandchildren. In his later years, he became a faithful parishioner of St. Helena’s RC Church in Edison, he enjoyed watching butterflies hatch and treasured visits from family, friends, neighbors, St. Helena Legion of Mary, and priests.
Harry Milne was pre-deceased by his wife Regina Mary (2016), and he is survived by his son, George of Port Richey, FL; daughters Debra of Jacksonville, FL; Linda Durning (Robert Hoffman) of Union, NJ; Sharon Slinsky (Tom), Hillsborough, NJ; Mary Beth (Chuck Safarian) of Colonia, NJ. He is survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren – Robert (Lisa) Mallis (Carly and Caitlyn) – Land O Lakes, FL; Christopher Durning (Kathy Forrestal) - Lyndonville, VT; Brian Mallis (Luisa Reis) (Gabby and Ellie) – St. Johns, FL; Thomas (Rebecca) Slinsky - Palm Bay, Fl; and Kristen Slinsky - Hillsborough, NJ. Attributing to his longevity was the loving care he received from his caregiver, Anna, for the past 11 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wounded Warriors Project or EWTN Catholic Network (not being able to attend church, Mom and Dad enjoyed watching daily mass on this TV Network).
