Born in Newark, on February 22,1931 to Doralice Yolanda Poiani and Julius Poiani. George grew up in Newark, New Jersey fluent in Italian and English graduating from Barringer High School in January, 1949. Known as "Punchy" in those days he traded his graduation gown for a pair of "blues" and sailed the seven seas in the United States Navy. He began his adventures around the world two days after his 18th birthday. A Korean War Veteran, George was aboard the USS Wright, USS Midway & USS WASP. George spoke of his service with respect and pride. He enjoyed sharing his service adventures especially while in Rome being selected for a private session with the Pope. During his years of service he was awarded several medals and commendations. Between his deployments George met the love of his life Lucille Mayo RN, a 1950 graduate of Barringer who had attended St Michael's Nursing School. While still serving his country George and Lucille married and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas for a few years and after the birth of their son returned to NJ. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, George worked as an accounts payable manager. In 1964 George and Lucille moved their family to Colonia. Sadly on 3/23/73 the family suddenly lost Lucille. George always rose to every challenge in life. A selfless man of integrity and deep faith. He was devoted to his mother, children, family, neighbors, and co-workers. He worked meticulously as an accounts payable manager until he retired at the age of 70. George loved being physically active. He kept busy tending to the property landscape and large garden. He grew amazing vegetables and loved sharing fresh tomatoes with family and friends. He would engage and encourage his children in physical activities as well. George loved to walk down Inman Avenue to the Library, post office, Vaccaro's, Foodtown and St. John Vianney Church. George was a great cook, loved music and while a man of few words always had a lot of meaning when he spoke.
