Fred Verdia Sr., 92, passed away on Saturday August 31st, 2024,at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway surrounded by his loving family. Fred was born and raised, by his mother Maria Martinez, in the Ironbound section of Newarkand was a graduate of Seton Hall Prep. Upon graduation Fred began his career as a Longshoreman working out of Port Newark and Port Elizabeth. Fred was a proud member of the International Longshoreman’s Association until his retirement in 2000.
Fred was predeceased by his mother Maria Martinez, his wife Mary Ann (Vacca) Verdia, his brother Joseph “Peppy” Verdia, and his sister Thelma Pannullo. Surviving are his children Fred Verdia Jr. and his wife Wendi, Valerie Maccie and her husband Tony, Maria Bauer and her husband John, and John Verdia and his wife Andrea. Fred is also survived by his two grandchildren Sophia Bauer and John Verdia Jr. (JJ).
Fred was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and enjoyed nothing more than spending quality time with his family. Over the years, family beach vacations to Ocean City, MD and Cape May, NJ were a family tradition and something he truly enjoyed. In his younger years, Fred was an accomplished guitarist (bass) and always had a love for dancing and music (Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Frankie Valli, etc). Fred also enjoyed sports and was a passionate fan of the NY Giants, NY Rangers, and NY Yankees.
A memorial service will be held at Gosselin Funeral Home, 660 New Dover Road, Edison, NJ. Visitation is Thursday September 5th, 2024, from 9am-12pm. A blessing will be performed at Gosselin Funeral Home at 12pm. Entombment will take place, later that day, at St. Gertrude Cemetery, 53 Inman Avenue, Colonia, NJ at 1pm.
