Elizabeth “Elma” Doherty, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, left this world on March 8th 2023, after a long and beautiful life at the age of 88.
Elizabeth was the second born to Joseph and Margaret McHenry on April 13th, 1934, having one sibling, Marie McHenry, three years her senior. After graduating from the Dean Gibson High School, Elizabeth met her husband, Stephen Doherty, in Kendal, Cumbria in England. She married and had two children, Martina and Stephen. Elizabeth, then moved to New Jersey, with her growing family.
Elizabeth was not only a wonderful mother, but she worked outside the home in several roles where she cared for her community. Her career included working for Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals, as well as the Landmark Inn and the Bootshop, both in Woodbridge; all roles where she exercised her innate ability to bring comfort to those around her. Elizabeth had a special place in her heart for animals. She was especially fond of felines, having several as pets throughout her life.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter Martina, her son Stephen, her five grandchildren, Kathleen, Brian, and Brent Doherty, and Gabrielle and Jarret Rhyner. Her other surviving relatives in England include Elizabeth and Sean Ashton, Amy and Robert Hodge, Joanne Davis, and Jake, Josh, and Charlotte Briggs.
Elizabeth and her husband, Stephen were faithful members of the Good Shepherd Parish, formerly known as the Holy Rosary Church, in Hopelawn, New Jersey.
Elizabeth was able to create a beautiful, and bountiful life for her family. As a beloved Matriarch, she will be remembered by all, for her care and compassion, that all of her family members will carry forward. Elizabeth lived a long and beautiful life. Her memory, her generosity, and her love will live on eternally in the hearts and minds of so many who loved her.
Visitation will take place on Saturday March 11th from 9-11AM at 660 New Dover Road Edison, NJ. Blessing service will be at 11AM at the funeral home.
Interment to follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery at 53 Inman Avenue Colonia, NJ.
