Edward Chon Obituary

“Devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather”

Edward “Hang Su” Chon, of Herndon, Virginia was called to Heaven on Monday, September 18, 2022.  He was 94 years old.

Mr. Chon was born in South Korea.  He attained the rank of Captain in the South Korean Army. After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Engineering in Civil Engineering degree from HanYang University in 1958, he began a distinguished civil engineering career with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (Far East District) in Seoul, South Korea, whereby he received unanimous support, based on his technical talent, to immigrate to the United States.  Mr. Chon, his wife, and his six (6) children settled in Long Island, New York and became U.S. citizens.  Mr. Chon also resided in Orlando, Florida and Herndon, Virginia.

“Hoppa,” as he was fondly known, was very proud of being an American citizen, as he viewed his relocation to the U.S. as a tremendous opportunity to fulfill the American dream for his children.  Family was his priority and he instilled those values of loyalty and commitment to all of his loved ones.  He was actively involved in his church and was named an elder.  He also enjoyed playing golf and staying physically fit.  Edward Chon is predeceased by his wife, KumSun Chon, who passed away 9 years ago after a courageous battle with cancer; his parents; his brother and sisters; and his beloved son, Yong-Min Chon. He will be laid to rest by his wife and near his son.

Mr. Chon is survived by his four (4) daughters and one (1) son:  Michong Avila, Maggy D’Onofrio, Tuck (“Tee”) Nerz and Mihyun Lavery, and Yong-Gon Chon.  Mr. Chon is also survived by his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Elvia, Adam, Annette, Nicolle, Jonathan, Christian, Nathan, Joel, Tabitha, Simon, Jesse, Mark; and his great-grandchildren: Emma, Maya, Roman, Miles, and Wren.

A private family service will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Gosselin Funeral Home, followed by a burial at Hazelwood Cemetery, Colonia (Clark), New Jersey.
