Chwen-Mei Chen

Dr. Chwen-Mei Chen passed away at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey on December 29, 2019, at the age of 73 years. She was surrounded by family and friends during her last days.

Chwen-Mei was born in Taipei, Taiwan and received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Chung Yuan Christian College of Science and Engineering (now Chung Yuan Christian University). She came to the United States for graduate study and completed her master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Utah. There she met and married Cheng-Nan Chen, Ph.D.; they had their son Angus and moved to New Jersey. After they had their daughter Jacinda, she went on to achieve her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences). She operated her own dental practice for many years, then transitioned to dentistry for the State of New Jersey.

She lived in Short Hills, New Jersey for 30 years. A lifelong learner, she stayed current with new developments in dentistry, medicine, and science, and kept her mind sharp by solving Sudoku puzzles. She had a great appreciation for music and the performing arts and often attended concerts, musicals, and cultural programs. She also supported her favorite classical music radio station and several charities.

With a passion for horticulture, she enjoyed strolling through botanical gardens and growing vegetables, flowers, and plants with health benefits. She loved traveling, whether it was visiting relatives and friends in the United States and overseas, or touring scenic places in Europe, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada, and the United States. A food lover, she was fond of preparing Taiwanese specialties and sharing them with her family and friends, as well as trying different cuisines from around the world.

She was predeceased by her parents, Professor/Dr. Teng-Ko Chen and Yuan-Yuan Chen. Surviving are her husband Cheng-Nan Chen, her son Angus Chen and his wife Natalie Chin, and her daughter Jacinda Chen. She is also survived by her five sisters Chih-Mei Chen, Mary Fu-Mei Chen, Man-Mei Tsai, Amy Yuan-Mei Chen, and Shu-Mei Feng, her four brothers Cheng-Cheng Chen, Li-Cheng Chen, Chet ChiaCheng Chen, Yung-Cheng Chen, and extended family, who live in New Jersey, New York, California, Michigan, Texas, and Taiwan.

Visitation - Sunday, January 19, 2020, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Gosselin Funeral Home, 660 New Dover Road, Edison, NJ.Funeral Service - Monday, January 20, 2020, Memorial Service at 10:00 am at the Gosselin Funeral Home, followed by cremation at Rosehill Crematory.
