Beverly Jean Vollmar of Edison passed away peacefully in JFK hospital on September 14, 2024.
She was predeceased by her parents, Oscar and Elsie (Duerr) Vollmar, her siblings Mildred,
Lorraine, Herbert and Thomas. She is survived by a niece, a great-niece, and several great-great
nieces and a great-great nephew. She grew up in Edison on a farm on New Dover Road, her
family raising vegetables and flowers for sale. A self-professed “daddy’s girl”, she took great joy
in working outside and helping him with these ventures; this love of the garden and the outdoors
continued through her adult life. In the late 1960’s the family moved to another part of Edison,
where she lived most of her life with her sisters until their passing.
Bev was also a fierce animal lover, growing up with animals and owning them at various points
in her life. She took pity upon more than one stray in imminent danger. Her best animal friend
when she passed was her cat Gracie; their relationship was one of close companions rather than
owner and pet. Bev gave to many animal charities during her life with the hope of saving as
many as possible from various fates. One of her daily joys was watching the deer and squirrels in
her yard, coaxing the latter with nuts on a regular basis.
She was also a long-time member of New Dover United Methodist Church, having joined in
March of 1953. During her early years at the church she was active in various ministries, most
notably the children’s choir; she assisted in helping them learn their music and coordinating their
performances, work she always remembered with great fondness. In her early retirement she
became a member of the flea market staff, assisting in preparing the tables every Monday
morning for the Tuesday market. She was meticulous about her set up, and spent hours either at
the church or at home preparing items so they would be in their best shape for sale. Stuffed
animals would be freshly washed and jewelry would be carefully fixed on homemade holders.
Crafting was another of Bev’s favorite activities. She spent many hours making items for all
occasions, her attention to detail resulting in beautifully finished work. As she grew older and
was diagnosed with macular degeneration, she sadly had to give up this work but continued to
speak of her past projects enthusiastically and talk about ideas unrealized.
Bev worked at Merck in Rahway for over 50 years as an administrative assistant (a family affair,
as all her siblings worked there as well). She enjoyed her job so much that when the company
downsized their business there, they had to offer her a special compensation package to retire at
70 years of age. She reminisced often about the friends she made there, and took great pride in
the work she accomplished during her employment.
Beverly will be missed by her friend Anita and her companion Gracie. She showed a pure love
and a compassionate spirit that will be remembered by those who truly knew her heart.
