Bernice Hayes Obituary

Bernice Hayes was born in Perth Amboy, NJ to Grace and George Waldman on October 28, 1931. She was the last living of seven siblings: Robert, Howard, Jackie, George, Tommy and Joyce and was a favorite Aunt who loved to go on adventures with her nieces and nephews. Bernice was married to Louis for over 30 years. She is survived by her daughter Doreen, son-in-law Earl and granddaughter Ava. Her Catholic faith was dear to her heart. Bernice was proud to be a telephone operator in the 1950’s as well as worked as a bus driver and food greeter.

Bernice was known to have “the gift of gab” and could start a conversation with anyone, often leaving people in “stitches” with her sense of humor. Proud of her Irish Heritage, Bernice was a member of the Ancient order of Hibernians. She loved animals, especially dogs, and was exceptionally kind and giving to people in need. Bernice loved the beach and travel, living her dream of residing on the ocean in Asbury Park for 15 years. She had the good fortune of seeing most of the U.S., including Hawaii, as well as visited England with her daughter. She lived mainly in NJ, but also in Las Vegas briefly with her family where she attended numerous shows and provided her loved ones the opportunity to see many iconic entertainers such as Frank Sinatra (her favorite) and Dolly Parton to name a few. Known for her bird whistle, she always had music in her heart, turning everyday conversations into a beloved song and dancing at any opportunity. Her spunk and determination were inspirational. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
