Astley George Nelson, passed away Friday, December 6, 2019 at JFK Medical Center, Edison, NJ. Astley’s family and friends knew him as “George”. Born in Mandeville, Jamaica, George emigrated to the United States and became a citizen in the 70’s.
George earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at City College School of Engineering in 1974. In 1989, he was awarded a fellowship to New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) to pursue a master’s degree in Computer Science, which he completed in 1991. During his career in Network Systems, he was employed by Western Electric, Bell Labs, AT&T, and then Lucent Technologies until his retirement.
George loved sports and was very loyal to his teams, win or lose: the Mets, Cowboys, and Islanders. He was also an avid fan of cricket, a sport he loved from his boyhood days living in Jamaica.
He was predeceased by his parents Enid and Fred Nelson and his brother, Roy Warren. Surviving him are his loving wife Patricia “Pat”, and his pride and joy, his two children Jodi and Gary. Also, his siblings, brothers Earl Nelson and wife Lois, Lloyd Nelson and wife Merle, his beloved sister Myrtle “Sweetie” Ramdatt and her husband Philbert, and sister-in-law Gertrude Warren, as well as, many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Viewing and home-going service will be held Saturday, December 14, 2019. Viewing will be held from 11:00AM to 12:00PM, and home-going service from 12:00PM to 1:00PM. Interment will be private.
