With sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of Angelo R. Gallo on July 4th, 2024. He was 85 years old.
Angelo was born in Vallata, Italy and was the eldest child of Francesco Gallo and Maria Luigia Lucadamo. Angelo spent years working in Switzerland and Canada before immigrating to the United States.
He met his wife of almost 53 years, Lucy, in Newark, NJ, and was married in 1971. A few years after having their first child in 1972, Angelo and family moved to Colonia in 1975.
A master Mason, Angelo worked for BAC Local 4 in the 70's and 80's, before starting his own company, Doria Mason. He prided himself on his work ethic, and was a skilled Mason who was versed in many disciplines, such as plaster, marble and tile. Angelo would spend the last years of his career working again for Local 4, until he retired.
Angelo, or "Falucc" as those back in Vallata knew him, was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed good food and drink, making his own wine and tomato sauce, along with his pickling hobby, which included a variety of vegetables such as mushrooms, cherry peppers and eggplant, and he always had a garden... always.
"Nonno" was always interested and involved in the lives of his grandchildren, and was lovingly nicknamed the "money machine" by his grandchildren for his habit of handing out $20 bills every time he saw his grandchildren.
A man of the town, Angelo was a Knights of Columbus member, helped form the original Colonia Soccer Association, and went to the Colonia VFW daily. If you didn’t see him standing in front of his house, you would find him at Fresh Grocer. Angelo loved to tell jokes to his friends, discuss politics and history (Italy always did it first and best), and watched a lot of soccer. He was truly one of a kind.
Angelo is survived by his wife Lucy Gallo, son Frank and wife Nicole, his daughter Michelle DeNault and husband Eric, three beautiful grandchildren Juliana and Jake DeNault, and Vivienne Gallo, along with his brother and sister and their respective families in Canada.
Visitation is Monday, July 8 between 4pm - 8pm at Gosselin Funeral home. Funeral mass is at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church in Colonia, NJ, on Tuesday, July 9 at 12pm. Burial to follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery also in Colonia, NJ.
