Elizabeth Clara Kay-Maharaj took her last breath in the early morning on January 15, after a long battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. She was 75 years old and was surrounded by her family at home in Colonia, New Jersey when she passed away.
Everyone who knew Elizabeth felt the love of her enormous heart. She was a humble, modest, kind and loving woman who lived a simple life, always giving to others but never to herself. She accepted everyone she met for exactly who they were and never asked anything of others – the only thing she wanted in life was happiness for her loved ones. We will always remember Elizabeth’s warmth, compassion and humility, as well as her bright smile and happy-go-lucky approach to life.
Elizabeth was born on March 27, 1943 in Curepe, Trinidad, West-Indies to Bertie and Marie Kay. She had four sisters: Evelyn, Elsie, Katie and Jean, and one brother, Calvin. She immigrated to the United States in the early 1970s and was the devoted wife of Sam Maharaj, for 55 years. She also dedicated 30+ years of service as a nurses aid at Clove Lakes Nursing Home in Staten Island. Aside from enjoying music, long walks, exercise and traveling, what Elizabeth enjoyed most of all was spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband Sam Maharaj; sons Rob and Rishi Maharaj; daughter Neela Maharaj-Pollard; grandchildren Dave and Veena Bissram, and Gavin and Dylan Maharaj; daughter-in-laws Jolanta Maharaj and Jennifer Maharaj, and by her son-in-law Andy Pollard.
