Barbara (Vrabel) Gomes

On September 18, 2019, Barbara (Vrabel) Gomes of Iselin passed away at the age of 83.

Barbara was born on October 31, 1935 in Garfield to George and Helen (Seliga) Vrabel. She graduated from East Side High School in Newark. On September 25, 1954 she married Mario Gomes, fellow East Side High graduate. She worked as a secretary for the parole board in Newark, before welcoming two children, Gregory and Barbara Lynne. When her husband went back to school after their son was born to earn a degree from Newark College of Engineering, Barbara was awarded an honorary “PhT” degree from NCE for “Pushing him Through”.

Barbara had a great love for her family, the beach, and card games. She enjoyed many summers with her family in Seaside Park and with her husband in Atlantic City. Barbara was also a sports fan and enjoyed cheering on the New York Giants as well as her grandchildren in athletic and other activities. You could often find Barbara cooking, sewing, reading magazines, watching movies, enjoying a good meal, and chatting on the phone with or writing cards to friends and family.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by Mario, her husband of almost 65 years, son Gregory Gomes and daughter Barbara Lynne McCue (spouse James), grandsons Jonathan McCue (spouse Cassandra) and Bryan Gomes, granddaughter Christine Medvecky (spouse Christopher), great-grandsons Cameron Medvecky and Theodore McCue, brother Robert Vrabel (spouse Patrice), as well as much extended family.

Visitations will be held on Friday September 20, 2019 from 2:00 – 4:00PM and 7:00 – 9:00PM at the Gosselin Funeral Home, 660 New Dover Road, Edison, NJ. Funeral Services will be on Saturday September 21, 2019 at 9:00AM at the funeral home. Followed by a 10:00AM Funeral Mass at St. Cecelia’s Church, Iselin. Cremation will be private.
