Stephen Clement Solomon, 61, passed away on the afternoon of April 24, 2024 in his home in New Jersey, after a four year long battle with cancer. Stephen, aka “Mumblies” or “Solo,” as he was affectionately called, was born on January 13, 1963 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. He grew up in Diamond Vale, Diego Martin, before moving to the United States at 18 years old to continue his education and make a new life for himself, where he eventually married his wife of 31 years, Peggy. Stephen obtained a degree in civil engineering technology from the New York City Technical College and pursued a career in civil engineering, in which he earned numerous certifications and became a senior inspector, overseeing various multimillion dollar projects.
Those who knew Stephen know that he loved to cook (and he was damn good at it) and he had a warm spirit. Stephen was always ready to kick back with anyone (even if he barely knew them) over a beer or even a card game. He was kind and inquisitive, with the sharpest memory, recalling distant memories with vivid details, names and facts. He was knowledgeable and worldly, he had more facts than an encyclopedia (remember those?).
His worldly knowledge and appreciation for other cultures was evident in his love for music. He loved all genres of music, and boasted an extensive record collection including soulful Amy Winehouse to Brazilian samba singer Seu Jorge, jazz music, calypso, classical music and more. He loved to have a good time and bring joy to others, including with his many, many corny jokes (he knew they were corny, don’t worry).
As Stephen faced this terminal illness, his legacy grew increasingly important to him. He would want anyone reading this to walk away with something, aside from the obvious—that he was very funny, a better chef than Gordon Ramsay, extremely loved and will be missed by many. He would want you all to also think of your legacy, your imprint on the world and to remember that you’re living not for yourself but for others.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Peggy; mother, Junia; daughter, Dahlia; step-daughter, Nicole; siblings Patrick, Patricia (husband Selwyn), Simone (husband Robert) and Vanessa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Hurdis.
Visitation Wednesday 9:00 to 9:15. Tribute will be 9:15-9:45. Blessing Service will begin at 9:45
