Betty J. Paulikas (nee Woods) of Iselin, NJ passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on March 18, 2024 at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. She was 87
Mrs. Paulikas was born February 27, 1937 in Newark, NJ to Martin & Helen (Britton) Woods. She graduated Weequahic High School, Newark in 1955. She married John W. Paulikas, Sr on August 13,1955 at St. Peter & Paul RC Church in Elizabeth. They lived in Elizabeth until moving to Iselin in 1961. Betty worked for the American Cancer Society until 1965 when she then became a stay at home mom to raise her children. In 1980, she began working for the Woodbridge Township Board of Education as a lunch aide at Kennedy Park School #24 in Iselin. In 1981 she began a career with the United States Environmental Protection Agency in Edison until she retired in 2009. Betty was a devote Catholic and a communicant of St Cecelia’s RC Church in Iselin for 63 years. She was a member of the Iselin Chemical Hook & Ladder Fire Company #11 Women’s Auxiliary in the 1970’s. She was president of the Kennedy Park PTO and on the Presidents Council as well as a member of the JFK Booster Club, Iselin Athletic Association where she coached softball and the Iselin Giants Pop Warner Football Organization. She was also extremely involved in the Woodbridge Community. Betty was an integral part of all her children’s activities and later that of her grandchildren.
Mrs. Paulikas will be remembered for her devotion to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and knitting and was an avid reader. She enjoyed camping and traveling with her family as well as attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities.
She was predeceased by her husband John W. Paulikas, Sr (2003), her parents, Martin & Helen Woods, her brothers Thomas (Shirley) Tait and Richard (Jean) Tait and her sister Helen (Robert) Downey.
She is survived by her three children Cynthia (Paul) Costello of Edison, John W. (Theresa) Paulikas, Jr. of Fords, and Stephanie (John Coon) George of Piscataway. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren, Brittany, Ashley & Courtney Paulikas, Christopher & Thomas George and Cole & Logan Costello and grand pups Daisy and Bailey. In addition to several nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Visitation will be on March 20, 2024 from 4pm to 8 pm at Gosselin Funeral Home 660 New Dover Road Edison, NJ. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am on March 21, 2024 at St. John Vianney RC Church, 420 Inman Avenue, Colonia. Interment at 11:30 am will be at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery, Colonia.
