Thomas Daniel Black, formerly of Jersey City, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home on September 13, 2016 in Edison, NJ at the age of 66. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Arlene, and his three sons, Matthew and Eric, both of Jersey City and Ryan, of Lavallette.

Tom was born on April 28, 1950 in downtown Jersey City. He graduated from Jersey City State College in 1972 with a degree in Elementary Education. He married his soul mate Arlene Ward, also of Jersey City, in 1974. He spent his career working for the Jersey City Public Schools as a teacher and then finished as a Technology Coordinator for the district. Even after his retirement he continued to show his love for the children of Jersey City and the environment by continuing his involvement with the Joint Activities program that brought students from the inner city to the School of Conservation. His children will always remember him as a kind and patient man who encouraged them to pursue their goals, while instilling in them a love for the outdoors and the understanding that family truly means everything. His grand daughters, Nora and Jane, will remember him as their ‘Pop’.

Although Tom loved teaching, his true creativity was demonstrated through woodworking and craftsmanship. Whether it was showing his well rounded knowledge of tools while demonstrating for Bosch, or putting the final touches on the shore house that his family will enjoy for generations, love and pride showed throughout every facet of his life. Tom was a dedicated humanitarian who led a selfless life with the understanding that in some way, he could always find the opportunity to help and support others.

A funeral is scheduled for Monday, 10 am at St. Helena’s Church in Edison, NJ. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Tom's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Adrenoleukodystrophy Foundation,www.aldfoundation.org/donate and/or St. Jude’s Children Hospital in his name. The family would like to thank Grace Healthcare Services for their supportive care for both Tom and his family.
