On December 29, 2017, Robert Philip Hierspiel, 90, passed away peacefully at the Haven/Hospice unit of JFK Hospital in Edison, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during World War II.   He was a proud lifelong resident of Jersey City before moving to the NJ Veterans Memorial Home in Edison a few years ago.

He worked as a Tool and Dye Maker at Inland Steel Container Company in Jersey City for over 30 years before retiring early to care for his wife Madeline.  Ater she passed he enjoyed taking long walks and riding his bike at Liberty State Park along the Hudson Bay and would then head out to Global Terminal in Bayonne where he would fish, swim or just hang out by the water with a few buddies who called themselves“the bay rats”.  This was his daily ritual and what he missed most when he began to fall ill.

Robert was predeceased by his wife Madeline Gentilcore.  Surviving are his children, Robert Hierspiel and his wife Judy, Lynn Thorn with Neil Ardolino, his grandchildren, Robyn Hierspiel, Jessica Hurring and husband Rob, Brian Thorn and wife Hope and Ted Thorn with Starr Morris.  He has three great grandsons, Henry and Jude Thorn and Benjamin Hurring.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 7th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm

In Lieu of flowers the family request donations in his loving memory to:

New Jersey Veterans Home at Menlo Park or JFK Hospital Haven/Hopice
