John A. “Jan” Neals, Jr., of Scotch Plains died peacefully on Sunday, March 22nd at the JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was 79. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he has lived in Scotch Plains for the last 55 years. He worked as a Printing Press Operator for the Star Ledger Newspapers in Newark for 45 years before his retirement in 2005. He was a parishioner of St. Cecelia’s RC Church in Iselin. Jan was a member of the Fourth Degree Assembly of the St. Cecelia’s Knights of Columbus, Council #3639, Iselin of which he was the Color Core Commander. He also served a 3-year term on the board of directors at St. Cecilia’s Knights of Columbus. Jan looked forward to his weekly volunteer efforts with Meals on Wheels working with his longtime friend, Jim Broderick. He donated to so many charitable organizations that his mail carrier deserved a weekly tip!
His wife, Alice H. Neals died in 2003. He was also predeceased by his brother, Donald Fox Neals in 2013; sister, Mildred Neals in 1976; and sister-in-law, Rita Luse in 2014.
He will be sadly missed by his nieces, nephew and friends.
